چکیده

[1] In situ crystallography based on diamond anvil cells have been extended to the multimegabar regime. Temperatures in these experiments have crossed the 2500 K mark. Yet, current high pressure-temperature (PT) standards of calibration produce uncertainties that inhibit clear conclusions about phenomena of importance to planetary processes, e.g., the postperovskite transition in Earth’s mantle. We introduce a new thermal equation of state (EOS) of MgO which appears to be predictive up to the multimegabar and thousands of kelvin range. It is obtained by combining first principles local density approximation quasi-harmonic (QHA) calculations with experimental lowpressure data. This EOS agrees exceptionally well with shock compression data. The postspinel and postperovskite phase boundaries recalculated using our EOS match seismic observations. The latter, in particular, supports the idea that postperovskite transforms back to perovskite before the core-mantle boundary. The recalculated experimental Clapeyron slope of the postperovskite transition is also more consistent with those obtained by first principles calculations.

A self-consistent optimization of multicomponent solution properties: ab initio molecular dynamic simulations and the MgO-SiO2 miscibility gap under pressure

We propose a new approach to parameterizing the Gibbs energy of a multicomponent solution as a function of temperature, pressure and composition. It uses the quasichemical model in the second nearest neighbour approximation and considers both a polynomial representation (for low pressure) and an exponential decay representation (for moderate-to-high pressure) of the excess molar volume v xs to ...

Numerical study of influence of type of nanoparticles and volume fraction on turbulent heat transfer coefficient and pressure loss inter a tube

The conventional liquids have some limitations regarding the thermal properties. The nanoparticles addition is one of the techniques which can modify them. In this research, heat transfer coefficient (h) and pressure loss (Δp) of various nanofluids containing Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO nanoparticles dispersed in water in an annular tube with constant wall temperature were numerically considered. Accor...

AGAINST THE VALIDITY OF THE CLOSED SYSTEM MODEL FOR CALCULATING OSMOTIC PRESSURE

This paper criticizes the model and the new definition for osmotic pressure given by Parsafar et al. [J. Sci. I. R. Iran, Vol. 10, No. 4, 233 (1999)]. The model is a closed system containing 1 kg of solvent plus m mole of solute at constant temperature and under pressure P0 + ? where P0 is the standard pressure and ? is the osmotic pressure of the corresponding m molal solution. While the total...

Thermal expansion of mantle and core materials at very high pressures

The thermal expansivities (a) of MgO and highpressure phases of CaO, CaMgSi2Ot, and Fe at ultrahigh pressure are obtained by comparing existing shock compression and temperature measurements to 300 K compression curves constructed from ultrasonic elasticity and static compression data. For gO, erepesend = where 7' is the Grtineisen parameter, Cv is the constant volume specific heat, Kr is the i...

Shock compression response of forsterite above 250 GPa

Forsterite (Mg2SiO4) is one of the major planetary materials, and its behavior under extreme conditions is important to understand the interior structure of large planets, such as super-Earths, and large-scale planetary impact events. Previous shock compression measurements of forsterite indicate that it may melt below 200 GPa, but these measurements did not go beyond 200 GPa. We report the sho...
